Live Oak, Gumbo Limbo or Southern Magnolia for a Florida Yard?

Begin with the room available at maturity

Southern live oak needs generous soil and canopy space. UF/IFAS notes that its roots can become prominent at the surface and may lift nearby pavement, so it is a poor match for a narrow strip even when the young tree fits easily.

Southern magnolia is also a large evergreen tree, commonly described by UF/IFAS as reaching about 80 feet or more with a broad spread. Gumbo limbo can develop large surface roots as well. For all three, measure from buildings, paving and utilities before comparing ornamental qualities.

Use exposure and range as filters

Southern live oak tolerates drought and wind well once established and has strong aerosol salt tolerance. Southern magnolia spans much of Florida and offers dense evergreen foliage, but its final form varies, making cultivar and nursery structure important.

Gumbo limbo is a tropical tree with good wind, drought and aerosol salt tolerance. In west-central Florida, its colder-limit location makes a warm, protected microsite and current local guidance especially important. A familiar Florida name is not proof that every Pinellas County yard is suitable.

A practical decision rule

Choose live oak only where a very large, long-lived canopy and broad root zone can be accommodated. Consider southern magnolia where a large evergreen crown, flowers and leaf litter fit the maintenance plan. Consider gumbo limbo only after confirming regional suitability and giving its surface roots and canopy enough space.

If the available planting area is tight, step back from all three and build a shortlist of genuinely smaller trees. The right answer is often a different size class, not a more aggressive pruning schedule.
